We offer courses in a broad range of visual arts and design disciplines both traditional and digital , as well as in topics related to art and design as integral parts of our lives and culture. Led by outstanding artists, designers and educators, these courses journey into the artistic process where the emphasis is on designing, communicating and creating.

Newhouse has been a clinical social worker for more than thirty years; she teaches at the Rainbow Community Center and is based in the San Francisco Bay Area. She has written a master’s thesis on the Ovular photography workshops and is the author of Foremothers of Photography Oregon Humanities, and served as a curatorial and research assistant for Sharing Circles: Carol Newhouse and the WomanShare Collective.
In sharing her work that has been informed by this substantial and singular archive, Winant will prompt the underlying questions of her practice- What is the fundamental work of world-building? How might we continue to reconfigure the feminist imaginary? What does a world without patriarchy look like? In what ways is optimism a political tool? How might we better understand the relationship between collectivity, survival, and joy? In what ways does photography have the power to continually re-inscribe desire?
Carmen Winant is an artist and the Roy Lichtenstein Chair of Studio Art at the Ohio State University; her work utilizes installation and collage strategies to examine feminist modes of survival and revolt.
Winant is a mother to her two sons, Carlo and Rafa, whom she shares with her partner Luke Stettner. This lecture is co-sponsored by UO Libraries.

For nearly 40 years, Sarah Kanouse’s grandfather designed, planned, and managed the spider-vein network of lines connecting Los Angeles to its distant sources of electric power. From the s until his retirement as general manager of the LA Department of Water and Power in , her grandfather made a second family of the grid and its substations, converters, and intertires, photographing these monuments of the modern everyday with one foot in the aesthetic and another in the techno-scientific sublime.
When he died, he left behind images of transmission towers along with snapshots of birthdays and family Christmases, inspiring Sarah to reimagine the electric grid as populated by non-human ‘uncles’ and ‘cousins’ whose names she should know and whose legacies she will pass to her child. My Electric Genealogy is an original solo performance that proceeds from Sarah’s imaginative rereading of her family tree.
It combines live storytelling with still and moving images, choreographed movement, and an original score to make intimate the crumbling, carbon-heavy infrastructures that imperil the planet and to probe the aesthetic, ethical, and practical responses they demand.
These systems include not just power plants and transmission lines, but also ‘infrastructures of feeling:’ closely held beliefs about nature, gender, race, and progress.
Sarah is an interdisciplinary artist and critical writer examining the politics of landscape and space. Migrating between video, photography, and performative forms, her research-based creative projects shift the visual dimension of the landscape to allow hidden stories of environmental and social transformation to emerge. The resulting works are imbued with kinetic, undulating effects that serve to dislocate the viewer from staid reality into an immersive ecosphere of echoing patterns and designs found in nature.
